KALYAN: A cycle rally jointly organised by the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC), the police department and Birla College witnessed an enthusiastic response from citizens on the occasion of World Bicycle Day and World Environment Day. Hundreds of cyclists from Kalyan and Dombivli participated in the event, promoting the message of sustainable mobility and healthy living.The rally was flagged off by KDMC Commissioner Abhinav Goel, who lauded the growing fitness culture in the twin cities. Participants included members of various cycling groups, students, environmental activists and residents from different age groups. Several children also joined the event, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.Speaking on the occasion, Goel emphasised that cycling is not only beneficial for personal health but also plays an important role in reducing traffic congestion, pollution and carbon emissions. “Ride a bicycle, save the city” was the central message of the rally, which aimed to encourage citizens to adopt eco-friendly modes of transport in their daily lives.The commissioner noted that there has been a noticeable increase in interest towards fitness activities such as cycling, morning walks and running among residents of Kalyan-Dombivli. He said these habits contribute to healthier lifestyles while also fostering greater environmental awareness.Officials highlighted that KDMC has been undertaking several initiatives focused on sustainable urban development and environmental conservation. These include waste management, renewable energy adoption, rainwater harvesting, wastewater recycling, tree plantation drives and biodiversity conservation projects.Encouraging cycling and non-motorised transport forms an important part of the civic body’s broader environmental agenda.As part of the awareness campaign, housing societies across the city are also being encouraged to organise activities promoting sustainable development and road safety. Nodal officer Prashant Bhagwat administered a pledge to participants, urging them to follow environmentally responsible practices and support clean mobility initiatives.The rally saw participation from several cycling clubs, including Kalyan Cyclists Group, Dombivli Cyclists Group, Bike Port Cyclists Group, Extreme Cyclists Group, Palava Cyclists Group and women cyclists’ associations. Representatives from civic departments, educational institutions and social organisations were also present.Officials said the overwhelming response to the rally reflects the increasing popularity of cycling as both a fitness activity and an environmentally responsible mode of transport in the Kalyan-Dombivli region.
