While Japan’s thrilling game against the Netherlands grabbed headlines, it was also the action of their fans after the final whistle that once again won admiration from people around the world.

Following an entertaining FIFA World Cup 2026 Group F clash at Dallas Stadium (AT&T Stadium) on Sunday, June 14, hundreds of Japanese fans remained in the stands long after nearly 70,000 spectators had headed for the exits.

In some viral clips, people wearing blue-coloured jerseys were seen collecting bottles, food wrappers and other litter left behind in the stadium in huge plastic bags. Notably, this was not the first time that Japanese fans engaged in cleaning up a stadium after a match.

The tradition of cleaning the stadium after matches has become closely associated with Japan’s fan culture over the years.

Their supporters have repeatedly been recognised at FIFA World Cups and other international sporting events for leaving venues cleaner than they found them. This practice reflects broader cultural values in the country, where cleanliness, respect for shared spaces and collective responsibility are encouraged.

“The Japanese Always Impress”

Once the videos of the cleanup effort spread across social media, people around the world praised the football fans, with many hailing the gesture as another example of the respect and sportsmanship that Japanese supporters show.

One user said, “Win, lose, or draw, the Japanese always leave a good impression. Picking up their own trash might seem like something simple, but it’s these small gestures that make the difference and earn respect wherever they go.”

“Meanwhile, the rest of us are still trying to figure out how to throw our trash into the bin, and Japan is out here cleaning an entire stadium,” another quipped.

“Class will always be permanent. No matter what the scoreline is on the pitch, Japan fans win off it every single tournament. Huge respect,” commented someone else.

“The Japanese always impress! They pick up the trash after the game and leave the stadium cleaner than they found it, win or lose. An example of respect and discipline that the world should follow,” said another person.

A different individual added, “That’s why I respect Japanese people. The discipline and consideration for others seem to start at a very young age. Cleaning up after yourself should be normal everywhere, but Japan takes it to another level. Respect.”

“I truly love this about the Japanese fans. They’ve consistently done this at every tournament. This is cultural,” a user remarked.
