Many of today’s largest tech firms have humble beginnings. Some of them emerged as hobby projects, whereas others were developed to provide a solution to a particular problem among a few consumers. Nobody could have ever guessed that these apps could be worth billions of dollars later.

By putting user interests at the core, growing rapidly, and continuously refining their offerings, the startups turned into global brands serving millions of people worldwide. They have completely revolutionized the transportation, entertainment, education, and financial services sectors.

1. Instagram – Sold for USD 1 billion after just two years

Instagram was founded as an application called Burbn, a location-based social networking app. Developed by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, it provided a lot of features, but the founders soon realized that only photos were popular among users. As a result, the founders decided to streamline the application, which turned out to be very profitable – it was sold to Facebook for USD 1 billion in 2012.

2. Uber — Now worth more than USD 150 billion

In 2009, Uber made its appearance as UberCab and provided an opportunity to order luxurious black cars through the application for those living in San Francisco. This idea soon led to the expansion of services to general transportation and logistics, which contributed to the company becoming one of the most valuable players in the global tech industry.

3. Airbnb – Built from air mattresses into a USD 90 billion giant

Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia came up with Airbnb after providing air mattresses in their apartment to people attending a conference but were unable to find accommodation elsewhere. This decision led to the creation of a global travel company operating in thousands of cities across the world.

4. TikTok – Parent company valued at more than USD 300 billion

Based on short videos shared through recommendation algorithms, TikTok became extremely popular among internet users all over the globe and became one of the most profitable apps ever created.

5. Duolingo – A language-learning app worth billions

It was started as a free application for learning languages through gamified lessons which ensured user engagement. This simple strategy worked wonders as Duolingo became a publically listed education technology firm.

6. WhatsApp — Acquired for USD 19 billion

WhatsApp was created by Jan Koum and Brian Acton, former Yahoo workers, with the goal of creating an app for updating statuses. Soon, however, the two entrepreneurs realized the potential of their invention and transformed WhatsApp into a highly popular instant messaging service. In 2014, Facebook bought the company for USD 19 billion.

7. Snapchat – From disappearing photos to a company worth billions

Snapchat started out as Picaboo, a student project that enabled its users to share disappearing photographs with each other. The idea turned out to be so successful among young users that it made the company a publicly held tech giant.

8. Slack – Sold for nearly USD 28 billion

Originally, Slack came from the development of an online video game at Tiny Speck. Despite the failure of this venture, the communication system was successful.

9. Spotify – A music-streaming giant worth more than USD 100 billion

Developed in Sweden, Spotify sought to provide a legal alternative to piracy by giving users the option of sharing music files. Its subscription streaming model changed the way people consume music.

10. Robinhood — The investing app that became a multibillion-dollar business

Robinhood was a stock-trading service launched on a mobile app platform for young traders. This firm has been successful since it lowered various costs involved in stock trading by eliminating many of the existing barriers. As a result, Robinhood attracted millions of traders and became one of the prominent firms within the fintech industry.

Not all companies worth billions of dollars emerge with a mission to conquer the world. Many were initially developed just to solve problems, and once users started responding to their offers, developers began scaling the applications into large businesses.
