An Oracle employee who lost his job during the company’s latest round of layoffs has shared how he managed to turn things around in just 45 days. Instead of slowing down after being laid off, he focused on learning new skills, applying for jobs consistently, and preparing for interviews.
The software engineer detailed his experience in a Reddit post, where he explained how he went from unemployment to receiving multiple job offers. His story has sparked discussion among professionals navigating a difficult job market.
He Focused On Learning AI
The engineer said he was laid off by Oracle on March 31 as part of a larger workforce reduction.
“I got laid off by Oracle on Mar 31, as with 30k others. To be honest, I didn’t think much about it. I was like, cool, I have to lock in now. Here’s what I did, and this might help y’all to get out of this “between jobs” phase,” he wrote.
After losing his job, he decided to use the time to learn AI engineering. He said he started from the basics and spent one to two hours every day studying topics such as transformers and attention models.
“1-2 hours every day for around a month, and I had two projects to showcase after this. Learned using Claude. Asked to make a 30-day plan and completed the plan accordingly,” he explained.
By the end of the month, he had built two projects that he could add to his portfolio and discuss during interviews.
He Applied Every Day
Alongside learning new skills, he also updated his online profiles and began applying for jobs regularly.
According to the post, he submitted applications for 10 to 15 positions each day through platforms including LinkedIn, Wellfound, Naukri and Indeed.
The effort soon started paying off. “Got reached out to by around 20 recruiters only through LinkedIn. LinkedIn Premium will help here. Some called and scheduled interviews as well. Most of all, I was curious to learn every day. I was soaking in knowledge like a sponge,” he wrote.
The Job Offers Arrived
Between early and mid-May, the engineer interviewed with seven different companies. While not every interview went as planned, he eventually received three job offers and accepted one of them.
“I started giving interviews from early May to mid-May. Interviews with 7 companies. Some I failed and ended up with 3 offers. I will be joining as an AI Engineer soon.”
Reddit Users Share Their Views
The post drew plenty of reactions from other users. “The reason you got the job so easily was 30 per cent your hard work in the past months and 70 per cent your Oracle background,” a user wrote.
Another commented, “Congratulations. Happy to see an engineer locking in and not dropping his shoulders. Kudos to your temperament.”
A different user said, “Anything you read, watch with curiosity adds up, in an interview, sometimes you yourself get shocked about how and from where the brain is bringing such information and showcasing it.”
Some users also felt the Oracle name on his resume played a major role. “Sounds like your oracle tag did the most heavy lifting,” a comment read.
