Home Minister celebrates National Handloom Day with weavers at Payakaraopeta

Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha reiterated that the State government is committed for the welfare of handloom weavers and stated that many initiatives were being implemented to strengthen the sector and improve the livelihoods of weaving families. She participated as the chief guest at the National Handloom Day celebrations organised under the ‘Nethanna Sevalo’ programme at Payakaraopeta in Anakapalli district, along with District Collector Vijaya Krishnan.

Addressing the weavers, Ms. Anitha said that handloom was not merely an occupation but a symbol of India’s rich culture, tradition and artistic excellence.

Highlighting Anakapalli district’s contribution to the handloom sector, Ms. Anitha said the textiles produced by local weavers reflected both quality and the region’s cultural heritage.

Under the ‘Nethanna Sevalo’ scheme, every weaver owning a loom would receive financial assistance of ₹25,000 annually from this year onwards, she said. She also said the government was providing up to 200 units of free electricity every month to eligible handloom families.

She added that the government was implementing a pension scheme for handloom workers from the age of 50. She assured that the government would continue to support the handloom sector by introducing more welfare measures aimed at strengthening the livelihoods of weavers and promoting the traditional industry.

Pointing out that nearly 70% of the workforce in the handloom sector comprises women, the Minister said that this industry plays a crucial role in women’s economic empowerment.

The Minister as well as Collector purchased sarees from the weavers as a mark of respect and gratitude.
