A Gurugram resident was surprised after tracking three months of food expenses and discovering how much she had spent on takeaways and dining out.

She shared the numbers on Reddit, sparking a wider discussion on eating habits and rising food costs.

She Tracks Three Months Of Spending

Living in Gurugram can be expensive, and for one woman, food turned out to be a bigger expense than she expected. After keeping track of her spending for three months, she realised just how much money was going towards online food orders and meals outside.

She shared her findings on Reddit in a post titled, “Tracked my food spending for 3 months. The results actually scared me.” Along with the numbers, she also spoke about how the spending made her reflect on her daily habits.

The Total Left Her Shocked

According to her post, she spent Rs 11,400 in the first month, Rs 13,200 in the second month and Rs 10,800 in the third month. Altogether, her food expenses reached Ra 35,400 in just three months.

She explained that a large part of this amount went towards orders placed through Zomato and meals from restaurants near her paying guest accommodation. Despite spending that much, she said the experience often left her unsatisfied.

She added that after eating, she would usually end up scrolling through OTT platforms and felt stuck in a routine. She also asked other Reddit users if they kept track of their food expenses and how they managed them.

Users Shared Different Views

The post quickly drew responses from people with very different spending habits. A user wrote, “My Zomato expenses are very low but F&B expenses are generally on the higher side especially during traveling. Last year I spent Rs 2.7L in total on F&B. Money spent eating good food is never a waste of money.”

Another said, “I’ll be honest OP, just cook yourself at this point. You have the money to buy stuff. Mixer, induction, vegetables etc.”

“My Zomato/swiggy in a year is less than your two month numbers. Get into fitness and these random urges will stop,” a person commented.

Others felt the spending was not unusual. “I don’t see a problem, tbh. That’s basic. Groceries and food is expensive now,” a user wrote.

Some Suggested Simple Changes

Several people suggested cutting back on delivery apps and preparing meals at home. A user commented, “Don’t eat out. Start slow – like quit eating dinner or do intermittent then start fasting for longer. Look for meal substitutes that would be cheaper and more nutritious. Eat out as a special treat only – like once in a month – then dress up and go out. Most important uninstall all apps. Swiggy Zomato etc.”

Another added, “Unless your work gets in the way, how about learning how to cook? Healthier and cost effective.”
