Belagavi: Panic gripped the Union Gymkhana Club area on Tuesday night after unidentified assailants allegedly tried to shoot a man inside the club, located close to the city police commissioner’s office.The target, Suresh Jalgar, was reportedly gambling at the club when five men, suspected to be from Maharashtra and Belagavi, reached the premises around 8pm. According to preliminary police information, two of them stayed outside while three entered the club and confronted Jalgar.Police sources said an argument broke out before one of the assailants allegedly pulled out a pistol and aimed it at Jalgar’s head. Jalgar reportedly managed to push the attacker away and fled.After he escaped unhurt, the accused allegedly came out of the club and fired two rounds in the air before fleeing the spot. The gunshots triggered panic among club members and locals, with many of them rushing to safety.Soon after receiving information, senior police officials, including police commissioner Bhushan Borase, DCP Narayan Baramani, camp police personnel and a forensic team, visited the scene. Police inspected the area, collecteevidence,ce and CCTV footage from the club and nearby locations.Jalgar later approached the police and gave his statement. He reportedly told investigators that the attack could be linked to an earlier shooting involving a person identified as Praful, and alleged that the assailants tried to eliminate him due to previous enmity.The incident falls under the jurisdiction of the camp police station. Police have launched a search for the accused and are probing multiple angles, including the identity of the attackers, the firearm used, the motive, and possible links to an interstate criminal network. Further investigation is under way.
