Gujarat government renews gyan sahayak contracts to address shortage of teachers in schools
Under the scheme launched in 2023-24, gyan sahayaks are engaged on contract for up to 11 months, excluding vacation periods

Ahmedabad: Following acute shortage of teachers in the state, the Gujarat govt has instructed that the contracts of current gyan sahayaks be renewed. With the new academic year 2026-27 already under way and fresh gyan sahayaks still not appointed, the commissioner of schools has circulated a notice to all district education officers, asking them to extend the contracts of gyan sahayaks who served in the previous academic year.Under the scheme launched in 2023-24, gyan sahayaks are engaged on contract for up to 11 months, excluding vacation periods. Their appointments end automatically on the final day of the academic year. As a result, all gyan sahayaks were released at the close of the 2025-26 session, which meant schools began the new term without this support. The lack of gyan sahayaks started to affect academic work. To avoid interruptions to students’ studies, the govt has decided to keep them in service until permanent teachers are appointed or a new recruitment process is completed. After the instruction, district administrations have begun the renewal procedure. In Ahmedabad, district education officer Rohit Chaudhary has told school managements to finish the renewals within two days and submit confirmation. This decision is likely to offer immediate support to hundreds of schools dealing with staff shortages and help maintain continuity in classroom teaching.
