Chandigarh: An institutional inquiry has been launched at the Govt Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, following allegations of misconduct and intrusion involving two junior resident doctors from the psychiatry department.The incident has once again pushed issues of women doctors’ safety within institutional hostel premises into the spotlight.According to a complaint forwarded through the head of the department, a female junior resident doctor alleged that a male colleague from her batch barged into her hostel room and misbehaved. While sources indicate that the complainant was not inside the room at the exact moment of forced entry, the allegations have triggered intense disciplinary scrutiny and safety concerns on campus.The complaint states that the male doctor allegedly broke into the girls’ hostel on two separate occasions — May 18 and May 20 — and reportedly made inappropriate gestures. While institutional mechanisms are currently treating these assertions as allegations, sources said parents of the woman doctor have filed a formal police complaint.Campus sources have expressed concern over alleged delay by the administration in addressing the issue, noting that nearly three weeks passed between the incidents.In response to the complaint, the GMCH administration activated its internal regulatory protocols. “The case was handed over to the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), which has conducted a thorough investigation and submitted its report,” confirmed Dr Ravneet Kaur, director principal of GMCH-32.Dr Kaur added, “As per the ICC, the male doctor was not in the right frame of mind and has been very upset thereafter. He will be counselled and punitive action shall be taken subsequently.”As the case involves young medical professionals, institutional authorities are reportedly prioritising a dual approach that balances strict disciplinary measures with immediate psychological intervention. The administration has ordered mandatory counseling for the male doctor before finalising any formal punitive steps.Sources said the ICC has held extensive discussions with families of both doctors to address immediate concerns. “Also, the doctor has been repeatedly stalking her, which has created unsafe environment in the college,” a batchmate of the woman resident doctor claimed.
