Family turns grief into gift of life; green corridor helps save lives

Belagavi: In a life-saving gesture amid profound grief, the family of a 55-year-old man from Bagalkot, declared brain-dead following a train-related accident, consented to donate his organs. The donor, identified as Dundappa, was shifted from a hospital in Bagalkot to KLE Society’s Dr Prabhakar Kore Hospital and Medical Research Centre in Belagavi late on Saturday, where doctors carried out the organ retrieval and transplant procedures.Police in Bagalkot and Belagavi districts created a green corridor and ensured smooth, traffic-free movement along the route to facilitate the swift and safe transport of the donor to Belagavi.Dundappa suffered severe head injuries after reportedly falling while alighting from a train at Dharwad railway station. He was initially rushed to SDM Hospital in Dharwad and later shifted to Kumareshwar Hospital in Bagalkot as his condition deteriorated. Despite sustained efforts by doctors, he was declared brain-dead.After counselling by doctors, Dundappa’s family agreed to donate his organs, offering a new lease of life to patients awaiting transplants. Medical teams ensured his vital parameters, including heartbeat and blood pressure, were maintained during the transfer.The superintendents of police of Bagalkot and Belagavi coordinated the green corridor for the ambulance. Sources at KLES Hospital appreciated the police department’s swift cooperation in facilitating the transfer at short notice.
