Escape gates at Ambazari lake to be ready by June endAmbazari lake to get escape gates by June end

Nagpur: In a bid to prevent Ambazari Lake from overflowing and inundating surrounding areas during the monsoon, the irrigation department has undertaken a series of safety measures, including the installation of escape gates at the lake. Officials stated that the work is in its final stages and is expected to be completed by the end of June.Heavy rainfall in the lake’s catchment area has, in the past, led to overflow, submerging nearby residential localities. The events of September 23, 2023, when large parts of the city were flooded, remain etched in the memory of Nagpur residents. To ensure that such a situation does not recur, multiple measures have been taken. The project has been planned in three phases. As part of the initial phase, spillway construction near the Vivekananda statue has already been completed at a cost of 4.5 crore. A retaining wall has also been built on the temple side.Subsequently, a work order worth 4.6 crore was issued in February 2024 for strengthening works. Each gate will be approximately two metres high and four metres wide. Officials said that the mechanism will allow controlled release of water before the lake reaches overflow levels, significantly reducing the risk of flooding in adjoining areas.
