Belagavi: Extreme weather conditions across parts of Belagavi district have left crops in the flowering and fruit-setting stages vulnerable to diseases, raising concerns among farmers. As of mid-July, sowing has been completed on over 6.5 lakh hectares, achieving 86% of the district’s target of 7.52 lakh hectares.Major crops such as soybean, greengram, cowpea and cotton have witnessed stunted growth due to inadequate rainfall and moisture stress. Agriculture experts have warned of an increased risk of fungal infections and pest attacks, which could affect both crop quality and yield.Despite a delayed monsoon and rainfall deficit in June, subsequent showers improved sowing coverage.

However, uneven rainfall patterns triggered localised drought-like conditions and crop wilting in some areas.According to agriculture department officials, soybean crops are currently in the flowering stage and are showing signs of green pod borer infestation. Green gram and blackgram crops have developed pale yellow leaves due to iron and magnesium deficiencies. Officials said these conditions could adversely impact yields if not addressed promptly.A team from the agriculture department recently visited Savadatti and Ramdurg taluks to assess disease incidence and advise farmers. Farmers who raised crops using loans are spending heavily on crop protection measures.HD Kolekar, joint director of agriculture, said awareness campaigns and field visits are being conducted to guide farmers on disease management and safe pesticide use.
