A corporate professional’s candid reflections after completing 16 years in the workforce have struck a chord on social media. Through his post, he shared that an employee works for their manager rather than the entire organisation, leaving people debating over whether a manager is more important to an individual employee than the whole company.
The corporate professional took to X, looking back at his career spanning over a decade and a half. He shared that he had four employers in four different countries and four industries, but all of them taught him just one main lesson, and that is that a manager has a greater impact on one’s career than an entire organisation.
“Your Only Aim Is To Make Your Manager Look Better”
“Next week I will complete 16 yrs in corporate world. 4 employers. 4 countries. 4 sectors. As stupid as I was on that humid morning in 2010!” he said in one post. In a second post, he further added, “Only 1 advise from 16yrs of working: You never work for the organization. You work for your manager. Your only aim is to make your manager look better in front of others. The organization is always too big for you to matter.”
He went on to argue that employees should prioritise good leadership over brand value or higher salaries when making career decisions. He explained, “If you have a bad manager and a great organization, leave. If you have a great manager and ok organization, stay and grind. Never leave for money exclusively. Who you work with matters 21 days a month, salary comes twice a month!
“Bad Manager Makes Life Miserable”
His post quickly gained traction, prompting professionals from different industries to weigh in with their own experiences.
One person said, “Can’t agree more on this. A good manager will make sure that you look great in the organisation.”
“Yeah it all matters how your Seniors treat you. A bad manager can make life miserable for that period, for fresher level it’s surely a blackpill,” quipped a user.

Someone shared their experience with a manager, writing, “I worked for my manager, made him look very good in front of his bosses. He gave me great grades, when it came to my promotion, my manager resigned and went to settle in a different country. What do I do now?
Meanwhile, an individual shared, “Bulls**t. You can always switch projects and different teams in a corporate firm. The firm and the perks it pays is much more important than whatever the bs you’re preaching.”
