Ahmedabad: A 22-year-old woman approached the Abhayam 181 women helpline after her family refused to take her back. According to helpline officials, the woman had left home at the age of 20 to marry a youth of her choice.“After her elopement, her father allegedly died by suicide, fearing social stigma. The family not only lost its head but also slipped into serious financial distress. After some time, the woman returned, saying she realised her mistake. However, this was short-lived as she again fled with the same youth,” said a helpline counsellor.Family members told officials that the youth is from Delhi and had come into contact with the woman through social media. He was unemployed and allegedly used her to extract money from her family.“The family has refused to accept her, while the woman told us she does not want to return to her boyfriend and repeat the same cycle. She has been placed in an observation home until the issue is resolved,” the counsellor added.
