India is home to millions of pet lovers, but not every dog breed is legally permitted or encouraged for ownership everywhere in the country. Over the years, certain dog breeds have faced restrictions, import bans, or strict regulations because of concerns related to aggression, public safety, climate suitability, and illegal breeding practices. In 2024, the Centre advised states and Union Territories to prohibit the sale, breeding, and import of 23 “ferocious” dog breeds and their crossbreeds following rising concerns over dog attacks. While implementation can vary across regions, these breeds have become some of the most debated and restricted dog breeds in India. (Image: Pexels)
