COIMBATORE: Notorious cybercriminal N Bhimudu Ajith Kumar, who escaped from the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Friday night, was recaptured by the city police within hours. Ajith Kumar, 29, who faces more than 25 fraud cases in Andhra Pradesh, was nabbed from a vehicle at a toll gate near Neelambur by a Race Course police team and highway patrol units on Friday night.Around 7.45pm on Friday, Ajith Kumar, an inmate of the Coimbatore Central Prison who had been admitted to CMCH for medical treatment since June 4, requested the policemen on guard duty to let him use the toilet. A policeman escorted him to the toilet and waited outside. When the inmate failed to return, the policeman entered the toilet and found that Ajith Kumar had broken through a cardboard partition in the restroom and slipped away through the adjacent women’s ward.The police launched a manhunt, alerting patrol teams on all state and national highways, which ultimately led to his arrest near the Neelambur toll gate.According to a police officer, “He was arrested at Neelambur, where he was hiding in a vehicle. Though he is a native of Tiruttani in Tamil Nadu, he was involved in multiple cheating cases in Andhra Pradesh. He is highly deceptive, knows six languages, and we are currently investigating if he had any outside help for this escape.”Ajith Kumar’s criminal record reveals a history of jailbreaks. He was previously arrested by the Andhra Pradesh police in connection with granite and online fraud scams. While being lodged in a prison in Guntur, he had pulled off an identical escape from a govt hospital there.Following his escape in Andhra Pradesh, he sneaked into Tamil Nadu, hiding out in places like Kanyakumari and Velankanni by renting taxis. His run ended temporarily in the last week of May when Tirupur North police arrested him following an altercation with a taxi driver. During the inquiry, police uncovered his real identity, leading to his remand in the Coimbatore Central Prison.
