It is hard to imagine that covering distances of 40-45 kilometres and nearly 2,000 kilometres can ever take the same amount of time. But that happened with a man living in Bengaluru.
He took to social media to share that the trip from the city to Kempegowda International took nearly as long as flying nearly 50 times that distance to Kolkata. The contrast highlighted issues with India’s urban infrastructure.
The man, Manish Kumar Singh, a finance influencer, shared a video on Instagram while travelling by car from HSR Layout to the Bengaluru airport to catch a flight to Kolkata. “I will share an interesting thing with you.
You guys will laugh after hearing it,” he said in the video. “It takes 2.5 to 3 hours to go to the airport from the city in Bangalore. It will take me only 2 hours 20 minutes to land from Bangalore airport to Kolkata airport.”
He Questions Urban Planning In India
He added, “Tell me one thing: should city planning be done in such a way that it takes so much time? I have seen cities like New York and Chicago. They are also big cities like ours, but you don’t spend this much time travelling to the airport. This is a big drawback of city planning in our country.”
He further argued that while airports are often located outside city limits worldwide, they are supported by robust transport infrastructure that allows people to reach them in about 30-40 minutes from most parts of the city.
He said that the issue lies not in building airports away from urban centres but in failing to develop efficient connectivity alongside them.
Citing the examples of the newly launched Noida and Navi Mumbai airports, he said, “The priority should be smooth traffic and better city planning. We shouldn’t build an airport first and think about connectivity later.”
In the caption, he wrote, “Our city planning is in total mess… Cities are not solving troubles of people but creating a bigger trouble.”
“City Planning Nahi Hai”
The video resonated with many social media users, several of whom echoed Singh’s concerns about traffic and infrastructure in Indian cities.
“Bangalore city planning is worst,” said a user.
“City planning nhi hai, city devasting ho rha,” another person wrote.
An individual mentioned, “It’s nothing new. Almost all destinations take less time
than the airport journey.”
“Bangalore is a highly unplanned city with roads being the most confusing,” a different person mentioned.
“Country is beyond repair,” another user remarked.
“Better to use local transport like metros; you reach on time without any congestion,” someone else suggested.
