Christian Eriksen has spoken publicly for the first time after collapsing during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine, insisting the incident was “very different” from the cardiac arrest that shocked the football world at Euro 2020 and hinting that he is not yet ready to walk away from the game.The 34-year-old was discharged from hospital on Monday after suffering a medical emergency during Sunday’s match in Odense, where he suddenly clutched his chest and fell to the ground midway through the second half. I am feeling good, and my recovery has already started.“In addition to being grateful for the support and assistance of all the players and the medical team on the field, I am also incredibly grateful to the doctors who have cared for me and my heart over the years. Thanks to their expertise, my ICD did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it.“For now, my focus is on recovering, spending time with my family, going on vacation, and playing football with my children.”The implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) that Eriksen has worn since suffering a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s European Championship match against Finland in June 2021 is understood to have delivered a shock to restore his heart rhythm.The device, implanted after the Euro 2020 incident, continuously monitors heart rhythm and can deliver electrical impulses when potentially life-threatening abnormalities are detected.
Team doctor reveals what happened after the collapse
Danish national team doctor Morten Boesen, who was widely credited with helping save Eriksen’s life five years ago, revealed that the midfielder quickly regained consciousness and was able to leave the pitch under his own power.“Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch himself,” Boesen said shortly after the incident.“As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should.“He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly and we were quickly in contact with him.“He will undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident. We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital.“But Christian is doing well, and asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them he was OK.”
Former teammate says Eriksen should retire
The update has eased immediate fears, but the incident has reignited debate over Eriksen’s future in football.Former Denmark international Thomas Gravesen believes Christian Eriksen should consider ending his playing career after his latest setback, saying the situation is taking a toll and that retirement may be best for his family, particularly his wife, Sabrina Kvist Jensen.“This has nothing to do with a career anymore. This has to do with life. It’s Christian Eriksen’s life,” Gravesen said while working as a pundit for Viaplay, according to the Daily Mail.“I saw his wife storm onto the field once more. What kind of scenario is he putting her in? You have to think a little further than the tip of your own nose. Football is completely irrelevant when something like this happens.”

Gravesen went further, suggesting the decision should potentially be taken out of Eriksen’s hands if he wishes to continue playing.
Cardiologist warns similar incidents could happen again
Medical experts have also weighed in on the situation. Cardiologist Henning Molgaard, speaking to BT, said the ICD had “undoubtedly done its job and saved his life” but warned that similar episodes could happen again.“It can definitely happen again,” Molgaard said.“We can see this in many ordinary people who have a small, discreet heart condition who have cardiac arrest again, and then the pacemaker takes effect. So regardless of what is behind it in Christian Eriksen’s case, it can happen again.”Molgaard explained that receiving a shock from the device can be physically overwhelming.“When you get a shock from the pacemaker, it feels like being kicked by a horse. That’s why you can yell ‘off’, and often you also have some ‘oxygen debt’ that you have to make up for before you regain consciousness. But it’s a good sign that he goes to the ambulance himself.“The spectacular thing is not that it happened. It happens to many people. The spectacular thing is that it happens on a football field.”

The cardiologist also suggested clubs may now become increasingly reluctant to take the risk of fielding Eriksen in competitive matches.“The vast majority of professional clubs won’t risk him falling again. Most will probably say ‘I think you should come up with something else.'”Yet Eriksen himself had previously spoken confidently about the protection provided by the ICD. Asked in the past whether he feared another collapse, he responded: “Worst case, if it happens again, this thing helps me right away.”
Memories of Euro 2020 come flooding back
Sunday’s frightening scenes inevitably brought back memories of June 12, 2021, when Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s European Championship match against Finland in Copenhagen. His heart stopped for several minutes before he received life-saving CPR on the pitch and was rushed to hospital.The midfielder later revealed he had effectively “died for five minutes” before being revived.Despite that ordeal, Eriksen remarkably returned to professional football just eight months later, first with Brentford and then Manchester United. After leaving Old Trafford in 2025, he joined German side Wolfsburg, where he still has one year remaining on his contract despite the club’s relegation from the Bundesliga last month.
Emotional scenes as teammates and fans react
The Danish Football Association initially confirmed after Sunday’s incident that Eriksen was conscious and receiving medical care, while supporters inside the stadium sang his name and applauded as treatment continued.
