Ahmedabad: An IPS officer, serving as an additional director in the Gujarat Anti-Corruption Bureau, has accused a builder couple of cheating him and his father of Rs 70.3 lakh. The officer alleged the couple took money for a flat and two residential plots, but never executed the sale deeds or returned the cash.Chandkheda police have now booked Amit Jani and his wife, Jignasha, for cheating and criminal conspiracy under BNS. Police also invoked the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act after the officer alleged that the couple made casteist remarks against his family.In his complaint, Pravinsinh Mal said he met the Janis in 2014, when he was posted as superintendent of police, Sabarkantha. A senior officer introduced the couple to him, after which they claimed they were prominent builders with projects in Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Jamnagar, and Halol.Mal alleged that the couple visited his home often, and gradually won the trust of his family and late father. Between 2014 and 2019, the couple took Rs 61.2 lakh from him and his father towards two flats, he told police.“My father invested his pension savings and agricultural income, believing their assurances,” the FIR states. Mal alleged that Amit Jani did not issue receipts and instead noted the payments in a red diary using code words.According to the complaint, the couple later offered their flat at Belvedere in Godrej Garden City, Jagatpur, to adjust the earlier payment against it. They handed over possession of Flat A-302 in Feb 2019 through an oral agreement and repeatedly promised to execute the sale deed later, Mal told police.Despite several reminders, the couple allegedly kept delaying the paperwork. In 2020, Jani persuaded Mal to pay another Rs 9.1 lakh for two plots in a Greenwood scheme, the FIR stated.The officer said the plots were never transferred to him, and the money was not returned. He further alleged that he later discovered Jani was not in the construction business and owned no such plots.
