A month after suffering a heavy defeat in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the DMK has launched a strong two-pronged attack on Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party, accusing them of weakening opposition unity and betraying political allies.

The criticism came through both the DMK’s IT wing and the party’s official mouthpiece, ‘Murasoli’, amid growing tensions between the two former allies.

DMK Mocks Rahul Gandhi

The DMK IT wing took to social media to criticise Rahul Gandhi and the Congress following the party’s decision to leave the DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu after the elections.

Referring to the Congress’ exit from the alliance, the DMK IT wing posted: “We carried the INC on our shoulders when they were fighting for their political survival, only for them to jump ship the second they saw a shiny new toy.”

The post ended by describing Rahul Gandhi as “a big joke”. The remarks marked one of the sharpest public attacks by the DMK on the Congress leader since the two parties fell out following the Assembly polls.

DMK Questions Rahul’s Call for Opposition Unity

At the same time, an editorial published in “Murasoli” on Monday accused Rahul Gandhi of contributing to divisions within the opposition camp despite publicly advocating unity among INDIA bloc partners.

The editorial took exception to remarks made by Rahul Gandhi after a recent INDIA bloc meeting and argued that he had himself played a role in weakening cooperation among opposition parties.

“Rahul Gandhi is lecturing on unity. But who weakened that unity in various states?” the editorial asked.

The article argued that Congress could not speak about opposition unity while several alliance partners had accused it of working against their political interests.

Political Realignment in Tamil Nadu

The attacks come in the wake of significant political changes in Tamil Nadu.

The Congress, which won five Assembly seats as part of the DMK-led alliance in the 2026 Assembly elections, later withdrew from the alliance and joined the Vijay-led TVK government as a coalition partner.

The move left the DMK leading a reduced opposition front in the state.

Relations between the two parties have also become strained at the national level. The DMK recently boycotted an INDIA bloc meeting, stating that it would not attend a meeting convened by the Congress. However, the party clarified that it would continue supporting issues raised by other opposition parties within the alliance framework.

Kerala, INDIA Bloc Criticism

The ‘Murasoli’ editorial devoted considerable attention to criticism previously directed at Rahul Gandhi by Left parties in Kerala.

It recalled objections raised by Communist leaders when Rahul Gandhi, during election campaigns, called for the arrest of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and accused the Left Democratic Front government of having a secret understanding with the BJP.

According to the editorial, these remarks prompted Left leaders to question whether Congress was more interested in attacking allies than confronting the BJP.

The article further alleged that Rahul Gandhi and the Congress had repeatedly acted against the interests of INDIA bloc constituents in states where those parties were better placed to challenge the BJP.

It cited criticism from several alliance partners, including Left parties and Samajwadi Party leaders, and argued that Rahul Gandhi’s political approach had repeatedly created tensions within the opposition alliance.

‘Congress Betrayed DMK’

Drawing comparisons with developments in Tamil Nadu, ‘Murasoli’ alleged that the Congress had betrayed the DMK despite contesting and winning seats under the alliance banner.

The editorial claimed that the decision of Congress legislators to join the TVK-led government was taken with the knowledge and approval of the party’s central leadership. It also questioned whether Rahul Gandhi’s recent assurances to alliance partners could be trusted in light of the Congress’ conduct in Tamil Nadu. In its strongly worded conclusion, the editorial argued that opposition parties were increasingly criticising the Congress rather than the BJP.

Blaming what it described as Rahul Gandhi’s “political immaturity” and lack of consistency, the article suggested that many of the current problems within the INDIA bloc stemmed from Congress’ own actions.

The editorial ended by asking who was responsible for “churning poison instead of nectar” within the opposition alliance and suggested that the answer could be found in the Congress’ political conduct.

Congress Rejects Allegations

The Congress has not issued an official response to the ‘Murasoli’ editorial. However, party sources rejected the allegations and defended the party’s actions in Tamil Nadu.

“The Congress has respected the people’s mandate in Tamil Nadu,” a party source said, dismissing claims that the party had undermined either the DMK or the INDIA bloc.
