Silchar: Assam University has denied allegations of inaction over admission irregularities, saying it ordered an inquiry and lodged an FIR.The clarification followed a protest at the university’s main entrance on Monday. Students sought transparency in admissions and the suspension of Students’ Union president Rajkinkar Chakraborty, who faces allegations over the purported irregularities.Registrar Pradosh Kiran Nath said the university constituted an inquiry committee headed by the dean of academics on July 8 after receiving complaints on social media and in writing.“The committee questioned the students concerned and examined documents and other evidence before recommending registration of an FIR,” Nath added.He said an FIR was recommended to facilitate forensic examination of audio recordings submitted as evidence. The university lodged the complaint at the Dwarbond police station on July 13 and handed over the recordings, inquiry report and other documents.At a meeting attended by vice-chancellor Rajive Mohan Pant, the authorities told protesters that the matter was under investigation. The students, however, demanded immediate action against Chakraborty.Pant said no conclusive evidence or investigation report established the allegations.“In such circumstances, the university cannot expel an elected student representative or initiate punitive action without following the prescribed rules and procedures,” he added.Dean of students’ welfare Barunjyoti Choudhury said the Students’ Union Constitution prescribed an impeachment process for removing an elected president.Pant proposed examining the provisions and forming a committee to determine possible action. The protesters initially rejected the proposal but later withdrew their agitation.Nath said admissions were conducted according to prescribed rules by a committee of professors. Legal action would follow if anyone is found collecting money outside the legitimate admission process, he added.The university said the allegations could be verified only after the police investigation and forensic examination were completed.
