Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday reviewed the performance of the finance department and stressed the need for further strengthening the state’s revenue collection mechanism while accelerating capital and programme expenditure to support Odisha‘s long-term growth ambitions.Chairing a review meeting here, Majhi said an efficient revenue collection system is essential for the state’s overall development. At the same time, he emphasised the need to increase capital and programme spending to sustain economic growth and infrastructure creation.During the meeting, finance department officials gave a detailed presentation on the state’s revenue receipts and expenditure trends.According to the data, grants from the Centre account for 10% of the state’s total revenue receipts, while Odisha’s share in central taxes contributes 31%. The state’s own tax revenue and non-tax revenue account for 31% and 28%, respectively.The review revealed that total revenue collection from various sources stood at Rs 61,593 crore till July of the current financial year, registering a growth of 7.3% over the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.The state’s own revenue collection recorded a stronger growth of 11.9% during the period. Own tax revenue increased by 9.3% year-on-year, while non-tax revenue rose by 14.8% compared with July last year.The govt also reported higher spending under both programme and capital expenditure heads. Programme expenditure till July was 19.1% higher than the level recorded during the corresponding period of the previous financial year.Capital expenditure witnessed a significant jump as well. By the end of July 2026, total capex stood at Rs 11,300 crore against Rs 9,399 crore during the same period last year, reflecting a growth of 20.2%.Highlighting the state’s vision of building a prosperous Odisha by 2036, Majhi said substantial investments in infrastructure would be required in the coming years. While expressing satisfaction over the growth in revenue mobilisation and expenditure, he urged officials to make further improvements.
