A local Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader from Tarn Taran in Punjab has been arrested for allegedly harassing a woman, police said.
According to officials, a case has been registered against Harpreet Singh at Shri Goindwal Sahib police station under the Indian Penal Code for allegedly insulting the modesty of a woman and for violating the IT Act.
The police complaint in this regard was lodged by the woman who stated that she is a homemaker and her husband lives abroad. On the night of April 28, she began receiving WhatsApp messages and phone calls from various numbers on her mobile phone around 8.30 pm. The messages contained vulgar language. Later, she received WhatsApp messages from another mobile phone number. The woman said that false and defamatory messages were also posted against her in a WhatsApp group.
Investigation revealed that the number belonged to Harpreet Singh, a resident of Chhapri Sahib, who is a former president of the AAP’s ex-servicemen wing.
Singh has been booked under IPC section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and section 67A of the IT Act (publishing or transmitting of material containing sexually explicit act in electronic form).
