A dragon soaring over Glasgow left early morning commuters stunned, with many wondering if they had witnessed something straight out of a fantasy film before the truth emerged

A strange sight in the skies above Glasgow left many early morning commuters doing a double take. What looked like a giant dragon was seen flying over the River Clyde, leaving people wondering if they had really seen a mythical creature.
The unusual moment was captured on camera and quickly made its way across social media, where users came up with all kinds of funny theories about the mysterious flying object.
A Dragon Over Glasgow
According to The National, the video was recorded by STV radio presenter Ewen Cameron while he was driving to work at around 5.45am. He later shared the clip online, saying he had spotted what looked like a dragon flying above the river near the OVO Hydro.
The video quickly grabbed attention, with many viewers trying to figure out what they were looking at. Some football fans even joked that it was connected to Rangers’ reported interest in Serbian midfielder Vanja Dragojevic.
The flying creature, however, was not real. It was actually a life-sized flying model of Syrax, one of the dragons from the television series House of the Dragon. The dragon weighs around 13kg and was created by German company Airstage using carbon fibre, foam and small engines hidden inside its legs.
How The Flying Dragon Works
Dennis Gutowsky, who operates and flies the dragon, explained how much work went into building it. “We built this beautiful flying dragon. Her name is Syrax, and this thing has 23 moving parts, which all work together. We have moving rudders, we have moving propellers, a moving tail, and also moving wings. It’s very cool to fly a dragon,” told The National.
He also said flying the dragon is very different from flying regular remote-controlled aircraft. “It’s very special because actually I fly RC planes, and that’s totally different. You have to train a lot to fly like like this,” he said.
According to The National, the dragon had earlier flown over London as part of a promotional campaign for House of the Dragon. The company behind it spent months designing the model to make it look as lifelike as possible while flying.
Social Media Has Fun With It
The video soon filled social media with jokes and playful comments. One user wrote, “It’s only a ridged back dragon, see them all the time in Wales, less common in Scotland and England. They don’t breathe fire like the black tongued dragon but they can be quiet aggressive.”
Another joked, “Nonsense! There hasn’t been a dragon in these parts for a thousand years.”
A third commented, “Glasgow waking up to a House of the Dragon promo flight at 5am is the most Scottish thing ever. Syrax doing the morning commute over the Clyde? Iconic.”
Someone else simply wrote, “Looks like an escaped parrot.”
It is possible that more cities will see ‘House of the Dragon’ promotions, as a dragon-shaped drone was used for a promotional event in Glasgow. The drone’s appearance over the River Clyde on July 22, 2026, caused curiosity among commuters. This event was part of a promotion for the TV show.
