An unexpected message during a train ride home turned one man’s plans upside down, prompting many online users to reflect on the uncertainty that often comes with corporate life.
The story was shared by LinkedIn user Pallabi Mallik, who recalled meeting a fellow passenger during a train journey. According to her, the two spent hours talking about life, family and future plans before one notification changed the mood completely.
He Spoke About His Plans
In her post, Mallik said the man had been cheerful throughout the journey. He spoke about a newly purchased house, the hefty EMI he was paying and his dream of taking his parents on the Char Dham Yatra that year.
She wrote, “I met a guy on a train last Friday. For the next couple of hours, we talked about life. A new house. A hefty EMI. His plan to take his parents on the Char Dham Yatra this year.”
According to Mallik, the man was travelling home to spend time with his parents and felt that things were finally going well for him.
One Notification Changed Everything
While they were talking, the man’s phone buzzed. Mallik said she noticed his expression change immediately. “He checked the notification. His face went pale. I asked, ‘Is everything okay?’ He looked at me and said, ‘I think I just lost my job,’” she wrote.
According to the LinkedIn post, the message was a layoff email. Mallik described how quickly his excitement turned into worry.
Just moments earlier, he had been looking forward to meeting his parents. Suddenly, he was thinking about how he would tell them that he no longer had a job. “The house was still there. The EMI was still there. The responsibilities were still there. Only the job was gone,” she wrote.
She added that the very people he had been eager to meet became the people he was afraid to face after reading the email.

The post struck a chord with many readers, who spoke about the emotional and financial stress caused by layoffs.
