Stand-up comedian Yash Bhardwaj has shared a shocking account of being detained in Dubai for 47 days over what he described as a “harmless, dumb reel” about Google Maps malfunctioning in the city amid the ongoing conflict in the region. The comedian revealed the details in a lengthy Instagram post, recounting an ordeal that began while he was performing at a comedy gig in Dubai.
According to Bhardwaj, he received a call from Dubai Police on March 19 asking him to report to the police headquarters immediately. What followed was something he never expected. Authorities reportedly took issue with a comedy reel he had posted online and viewed it as a potential national security concern. As a result, the comedian was detained and later arrested, spending the next 47 days in a detention centre before being deported to India on May 5.
Sharing his experience on Instagram, Bhardwaj said the episode took a significant toll on both him and his family. He wrote that the detention “drained us physically, emotionally, and, to some extent, financially.” Despite the difficult circumstances, the comedian said he is grateful to be back home and slowly rebuilding his life and career.
His post quickly gained attention online, with many users expressing disbelief that a comedy reel could lead to such severe consequences. Several commenters described the incident as “terrifying” and “hard to process”, while others said the story served as a reminder that content considered harmless in one country may be interpreted very differently elsewhere.
Many followers also flooded the comments section with messages of support, welcoming him back and wishing him strength as he moves forward. “This is definitely sad news, but there is always a silver lining in everything that has happened. Wishing you the best” a user on Instagram commented.
He also said that Mumbai has played a major role in helping him return to normalcy. He thanked several comedy clubs and show organisers for giving him opportunities to get back on stage much sooner than he had anticipated. Fans praised his resilience, with many calling his return to performing “inspiring” after such a difficult experience.
Looking ahead, Bhardwaj said he is heading to Bengaluru, the city where his love for stand-up comedy first began 16 years ago. Describing it as the start of a new chapter, the comedian struck an optimistic note, choosing to focus on the future after weeks of uncertainty and hardship.
A user commented, “Glad you’re in good spirits and back on the comedy train! You’re missed, and I’m hoping our paths will cross again in the future.”
“Good luck, Yash with this new journey. It will all make sense eventually, sending you lots of love ❤️” another commented.
