Running from the far northeast to southern India, the Vivek Express remains one of the longest train journeys in the country covering thousands of kilometres in nearly three days.

India is home to some of the world’s most extraordinary railway journeys, but few are as massive as the Vivek Express route connecting Dibrugarh in Assam to Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. The train is widely known as India’s longest running train route by distance and duration, taking nearly 75 hours to complete while crossing 12 Indian states along the way.
Operated by Indian Railways, the Dibrugarh Kanyakumari Vivek Express covers a distance of more than 4,100 kilometres, according to official railway records. The journey stretches from India’s northeastern tea growing region all the way to the southern tip of the country near the Indian Ocean.
The train was introduced in 2011 to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, from whom it gets its name. According to Indian Railways, the route was designed to improve connectivity between the Northeast and southern India while also becoming a symbolic cross-country journey linking vastly different regions of the country.
What makes the route especially fascinating is the sheer diversity passengers experience during the trip. Over the course of nearly three days, the train passes through Assam, Nagaland, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and several other regions depending on operational routing and railway zones.
Passengers travelling the full distance witness dramatic changes in geography, food, language, climate and culture without ever leaving the train. The journey moves through tea gardens in Assam, river plains in eastern India, crowded urban junctions, coastal stretches and finally the tropical landscapes of southern Tamil Nadu.
According to Indian Railways data, the train stops at more than 55 stations during the route. Major junctions include Guwahati, New Jalpaiguri, Bhubaneswar, Vijayawada, Chennai and Madurai. Railway enthusiasts often describe the Vivek Express as less of a train ride and more of a moving cross-country experience.
The train has also become popular online among travel vloggers and railway content creators. Videos documenting the full 75-hour trip frequently go viral because of the extreme duration and constantly changing scenery outside the windows.
Despite newer faster trains entering India’s railway network, the Vivek Express continues to hold a unique place in Indian Railways history. Many passengers still undertake the complete journey not just for transportation but for the experience itself.
For many travellers, the route represents something larger than a train schedule. It is one of the few journeys in India where passengers can watch the country slowly transform state by state while travelling almost the entire length of the nation on a single train.
