Congress recorded Assam’s top four victory margins – all above one lakh. Out of the 126 seats in the state, Congress bagged 19 and 13 of these had margin above 50,000 votes.
The BJP dominated large parts of Upper Assam, Guwahati and Barak Valley with its own landslide wins.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has maintained its hold over Assam with 82 seats, 18 more than the majority mark of 64. Clubbed with allies, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured more than 100 seats in the state for the first time at 102 seats, including 10 seats each from Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF). However, it was the Congress that recorded the state’s top four victory margins – all above one lakh. Out of the 126 seats in the state, Congress bagged 19 seats and 13 of these had victory margin above 50,000 votes. Notably, 10 of its victories were among Assam’s top 20 biggest winning margins. In four seats, the party secured a margin of more than one lakh votes – Gauripur (1,19,097), Jaleshwar (1,09,688), Samaguri (1,08,310) and Algapur-Katlicherra (1,05,448).
Most of these landslide victories came from minority-dominated pockets, highlighting how the opposition vote consolidated behind Congress as the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) collapsed from 16 seats in 2021 to just two in 2026. In 2016, AIUDF bagged 13 seats. Congress seats fell from 26 in 2016 to 29 in 2021 and further to 19 in 2026, even as its vote count rose from 52.38 lakh in 2016 to 57.03 lakh in 2021 and 64.64 lakh this year — underscoring how concentrated its support became. The scale of Congress victories showed that while the party failed to expand statewide, it successfully consolidated minority-heavy constituencies where AIUDF had once been dominant.
The BJP, meanwhile, dominated large parts of Upper Assam, Guwahati and Barak Valley with its own landslide wins. Its biggest victory came in Lakhipur, where Kaushik Rai won by 99,401 votes, followed by Pijush Hazarika’s 93,584-vote win in Jagiroad. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ranked seventh on the statewide margin chart, retaining Jalukbari by 89,434 votes.
Two among the five lowest margin seats were bagged by AGP – in Hajo-Sualkuchi, Prakash Chandra Das won by just 724 votes, while Bilasipara was decided by 2,694 votes. The remaining two elected the BJP and one voted for Congress.
Across another nine seats, the margin was between 10,000 and 20,000 votes while in 77 it was below 50,000 votes. The highest victory margin in both 2016 and 2021 remained below 40,000 votes, highlighting how dramatically Assam’s electoral map has shifted this year.
With just five close contests and 49 seats decided by margins above 50,000 votes, Assam’s 2026 verdict was less about swing seats and more about entrenched political strongholds.
