9 fall ill after eating wild mushrooms in Belagavi village

Belagavi: Nine people from two families in Umarani village of Chikodi taluk fell ill after consuming wild mushrooms collected from a farmland and are undergoing treatment at Chikodi sub-district hospital. A pregnant woman among them has been shifted to Belagavi district hospital for advanced care.Members of the Jiddimani and Koli families had plucked wild mushrooms while returning home from work on Friday evening. They cooked and consumed them at home. Seeing this, another family also collected mushrooms from the same farmland, prepared them and ate them.However, the field from which the mushrooms were collected had reportedly been sprayed with pesticides earlier. Soon after consuming the mushrooms, several family members developed symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea and fell ill.Local residents immediately shifted them to Chikodi Govt Hospital, where doctors provided treatment. A pregnant woman was later referred to Belagavi District Hospital for further medical attention.Doctors said the condition of all the patients is stable and none is in danger.Following the incident, the health department cautioned the public against consuming wild mushrooms without properly identifying them, as some varieties may be poisonous or contaminated with harmful chemicals.
