Mysuru: On Sunday, when thousands of candidates across the state will appear for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Preliminary Examination, the students of Maharani’s Women’s Commerce and Management College is set to create history.Out of 120 MCom students at the college, as many as 70 will appear for the prelims — a first for any institution in the state. According to Niranjana Babu HS, head of the department, the initiative began in late Feb. “Most of our students are from rural areas with moderate economic backgrounds. We wanted them to dream big, and that’s how the idea emerged,” he said. A student coordinator was appointed to follow up, and 70 students eventually decided to take up the examination.He added that, apart from the syllabus, students were trained through group discussions and daily sessions on current affairs. “We discuss key developments, major news and editorials in class. This helped them take up the challenge,” he said.First-year MCom student Sapna said she chose to prepare for the civil services believing that authority is key to addressing societal challenges.
