Vasco: Police arrested 26 people and seized electronic gadgets worth Rs 55 lakh during a raid on an illegal call centre operating from a rented premise at Verna IDC, on Thursday.Police said the call centre employees were involved in cheating several US citizens by impersonation. Those arrested were from Nagaland, Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. They were living in rented flats at the Ocean View Apartment at Sancoale.PI Anand Shirodkar said the employees posed as US bank officials, and cheated US citizens by inducing them to make payments through gift cards.“They used VPN calling and spoofing technology to contact US citizens.,” said Shirodkar.He added that 145 laptops, 45 mobile phones, routers, headphones, and other electronic accessories used in the commission of the offence were seized.The accused have been booked under the provisions of the BNS and the IT Act. They have been remanded in two days of police custody.Shirodkar said efforts are under way to identify others involved in the fraud.
