Kolkata: The decomposed bodies of a 26-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, believed to have been in a live-in relationship, were recovered from a rented one-bedroom flat in Golf Green’s Aravinda Nagar on Sunday. The incident has triggered a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths.The deceased were identified as Md Dilshad, a resident of Tiljala who had rented the flat in April, and Mehulie Sanyal, from Ramgarh in Jadavpur. What added to the mystery was the presence of another young couple at the flat. Police found the two in a heavily intoxicated condition and took them into custody for questioning. None have been arrested in this case yet.According to investigators, the bodies were in an advanced state of decomposition, suggesting the two may have died on Friday. While police suspect a possible drug overdose, the exact cause and time of death will be determined after the post-mortem.The incident came to light after residents noticed a foul smell emanating from the third-floor flat on Sunday morning.When repeated attempts to contact the occupants failed, a neighbour alerted the police. Officers arrived around noon, broke open the door and discovered the bodies inside.Police said Mehulie’s naked body was found near the entrance of the flat, while Dilshad’s body — in boxer shorts — was found inside the bedroom. The other couple were also found inside the bedroom in an intoxicated state.Investigators also found injury marks on the woman’s head. Forensic samples have been collected, and officers from both Golf Green police station and the Kolkata Police homicide department are investigating the case.“We are questioning the two survivors inside the flat why they did not inform police despite being present there. Their statements are being examined as part of the investigation. But the two are still in a dazed state and their statements are incoherent,” said an officer.Residents alleged that the flat frequently hosted gatherings of young people and that drug use was common there. They said loud music and shouting were often heard late at night, but there had been no activity from the flat for the past two days. Police reportedly recovered a substantial quantity of narcotic and intoxicating substances from the premises.Rajib Bandyopadhyay, who works in an office on the ground floor of the apartment, said neighbours had found the frequent visits to the flat suspicious but chose not to intervene. “For the past two days, we did not see anyone going upstairs,” he said.Police said Mehulie’s family last spoke to her on Friday morning and had been unable to contact her since.One of Mehulie’s friends said, “I called her repeatedly. The phone kept ringing, but nobody answered. Later, it was switched off.”A relative of Dilshad who was present at the police station said, “Dilshad had told us that he was renting a separate place for work-related convenience. Since it was for work, we did not object.”
