Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh has been reappointed for a second term of five years. With this, he becomes the first V-C to secure a consecutive term following an amendment to the university’s statutes in 2023.

Earlier, the Delhi University Act prohibited a second term for a V-C through reappointment.

According to a letter from the Ministry of Education dated July 2, Prof. Singh’s second term will take effect from October 8. The letter stated that the terms and conditions of his services will be governed by the Act, statutes, and ordinances of the university.

He first assumed charge of office on October 8, 2021, and had earlier served as the V-C of Delhi Technological University. He was reappointed for a second term there as well.

The National Democratic Teachers’ Front, an affiliate of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, in a statement, welcomed the reappointment and congratulated Prof. Singh.

The NDTF said it appreciated several measures taken during Prof. Singh’s tenure, including regularisation of teachers, improvement in rankings, implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020, and the introduction of the single girl child quota in admissions.

It added that the Vice-Chancellor should focus in his next term on issues such as timely promotions for teachers and a comprehensive review of NEP implementation in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
