Woman, lover held for killing husband, passing it off as suicide

Kanpur: Police on Tuesday night arrested a woman and her alleged lover for allegedly killing her husband in Toda village of Etawah on Sunday night and staging the crime as a suicide. The woman has been identified as Ashiki Devi (30), while her alleged lover has been identified as Shivam (24). The deceased was identified as Anand Rajput alias Mahboob (35).Police said the murder angle came to light only after the postmortem report, following which the duo was arrested.Cops said Anand’s body was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside his house on July 12, in what initially appeared to be a case of suicide.SSP Brijesh Kumar Srivastav said that suspecting foul play, police did not conduct a routine postmortem and instead got the autopsy conducted by a panel of two doctors. The procedure was videographed. The postmortem report confirmed death by strangulation and revealed injury marks on the neck.Police detained the woman for questioning after receiving the autopsy report. According to police, she kept changing her statements but eventually confessed during sustained questioning, following which her alleged lover was also arrested. The SSP said the accused first allegedly made Anand unconscious by mixing sleeping pills in his milk. They then allegedly strangled him with a scarf and later hung the body from the fan to make the murder appear to be a suicide.Police also recovered a scarf, the deceased’s gold ring, an Android mobile phone and a keypad mobile phone allegedly used in the murder conspiracy. The SSP said Anand had become aware of the relationship between his wife and Shivam some time ago.He had allegedly found the two in a compromising position in March and filed a case against Shivam, following which he was sent to jail. The SSP said Shivam was released on bail in June, after which he allegedly hatched a plan with the woman to kill Anand. He said the two were produced in a court on Wednesday and sent to jail.
