Woman, 7-year-old son drown in Rajasthan's farm water reservoir while taking selfies

JAISALMER: A tragic incident occurred on Sunday in Banon Ki Beri Doodh village under the Sadar police station area of Barmer district, where a mother and her seven-year-old son drowned in a farm water reservoir (diggi) while taking selfies near it.According to police, Jiyo Devi (30), wife of Gosairam, had come to her parents’ home with her son Hitesh (7) three days earlier. On Sunday morning, the mother and son were taking selfies near the reservoir located close to the house. During the process, Hitesh reportedly slipped and fell into the deep water.Seeing her son drowning, Jiyo Devi immediately jumped into the reservoir in an attempt to save him. However, due to the depth of the water, both mother and son began to drown. Hearing their cries for help, nearby residents rushed to the spot and tried to rescue them, but were unsuccessful.After receiving information, the police and Civil Defence teams reached the scene. A JCB machine was brought in, and one wall of the reservoir was demolished to drain the water. After nearly three hours of continuous efforts, the bodies of both mother and son were recovered.Sadar Police Station Officer Kartar Singh said the bodies had been kept at the mortuary of Dhorimanna Hospital. Further legal procedures will be carried out after the arrival of the deceased woman’s in-laws, who have been informed about the incident.The deceased woman’s brother, Jalaram, said other family members had gone to attend a social function on Sunday, leaving only Jiyo Devi and her son at home.He explained that after taking a selfie with her son, Jiyo Devi was lowering him down when his foot slipped, causing him to fall into the reservoir.Local residents and Civil Defence personnel joined the rescue operation, which lasted for about three hours before the bodies could finally be recovered.According to available information, Jiyo Devi was married to Gosairam, a resident of Kitnoria village, in 2015.
