A traveller’s shocking revelation about receiving a Rs 1.5 lakh traffic challan nearly a year after returning home from an international trip has gone viral online. The post was shared on X by a user named Poan Sapdi, who revealed that she had received a traffic challan several months after returning from a vacation in Switzerland.
What surprised many online was not just the delay in receiving the notice, but also the hefty amount involved. Sharing her experience, she wrote, “Has anyone here received a traffic violation fine from Switzerland months after returning from a vacation?
We just received a challan of almost Rs 1 lakh, nearly a year after our trip. We’re trying to understand if there’s any way to appeal, reduce, or get it waived.”
In a follow-up comment, she sought advice from fellow travellers and internet users, writing, “Would love to hear from anyone who has dealt with something similar or knows the process. Any help would be greatly appreciated.”
The post quickly gained traction on the platform, amassing more than 1.1 million views and around 2,800 likes. Hundreds of users joined the conversation, sharing their own experiences with traffic fines received long after returning from international trips.
One user recalled a similar incident, saying, “Got one from Germany once after a trip for 10k. Paid. But 1 lakh is crazy.” Responding to the comment, Poan Sapdi revealed that the actual amount was even higher than initially thought. “We just realised it’s actyally more than that, 😭😭 1.5 lakhs in total,” she wrote.
Another user shared a related concern, commenting, “Pata chale toh batana pls – we have challan of approx 12-15k of italy – unable to pay because don’t know how to pay.”
The discussion also drew strong opinions from some users. One person wrote, “If you committed a traffic violation, pay it up and move on. dont try to bribe or beg like you do in india.”
Others offered practical advice based on their experiences. “You have 30 days to appeal, i don’t think you can appeal it afterwards. Pay it other wise you will have hard tims to cross border legally next time. I also paid it it was only 40CHZ after 6 monthsੰ,” said one commenter.
Another user explained that such delays are not uncommon in Europe, especially when violations are recorded by traffic cameras. “It might be because of violations captured in camera. Tickets can be issued even after months. If you don’t plan to visit switzerland again, don’t worry about it. Else if you don’t pay fine and visit again, you won’t be able to rent a car or drive or could get arrested as well,” the user wrote.

One user commented, “Yes we did, from Iceland (40k) and Turkey (22k)😭We did our best, asked for proofs and got every single detail along with videos and pics (sometimes it was over speeding and/or parking the car in a non parking zone out of no awareness). Couldn’t help, had to pay😅”
Another highlighted Switzerland’s strict stance on traffic violations, particularly speeding offences. “😂😂😂😂. Pay it otherwise, you aren’t getting a Schengen Visa again. Switzerland is one the countries who really take their speeding violation very serious,” the user wrote.
