Ahmedabad: Waterborne illnesses continue to mount in Ahmedabad as monsoon progresses, with 345 fresh cases of diarrhoea, typhoid and jaundice reported in the first 12 days of July. Civic health data released by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Tuesday also flagged contaminated water samples from parts of the city, underscoring concerns over water quality during the rainy season.According to the AMC health department, between July 1 and July 12, the city recorded 196 cases of diarrhoea and vomiting, 127 cases of typhoid and 22 cases of jaundice, taking the total number of water-borne disease cases during the period to 345. Vector-borne diseases also continued to surface, with 10 malaria cases and eight dengue cases reported over the same 12-day period.The civic body simultaneously carried out water quality surveillance across Ahmedabad. Of the 20,675 water samples collected for chlorine testing, 22 showed absence of residual chlorine needed to disinfect drinking water. In bacteriological tests, 26 of the 2,990 water samples collected from different parts of the city were found unfit for consumption.The figures added to the city’s growing disease burden. From Jan 1 to July 12, Ahmedabad recorded 3,330 cases of diarrhoea-vomiting, 1,061 typhoid cases and 386 jaundice cases. During the same period, the city reported 135 malaria cases, including 14 cases of the more severe falciparum malaria, along with 167 dengue cases and two chikungunya infections.
