A man from the hills of Uttarakhand has just turned what many thought was science fiction into a viral reality. Ravi Tamta, an innovator from Kaflikhan village in Almora, has successfully test-flown the HAPIDA SKYNeX, a single-seater electric flying vehicle prototype that he hopes will one day transform personal transportation in India.

Videos of the test flight, conducted on an open ground in Almora, are now making the rounds on social media. Built under Tamta’s startup, Hapida Sky Private Limited, the aircraft is a modified and upgraded version of drone technology designed to carry a person safely through the air.

Tamta says the idea was born out of a simple problem. The 40-kilometre journey from his village to his home, which usually takes around 90 minutes by road, could potentially be completed in just 10 minutes by air. His long-term vision is to develop a safe, electric personal flying vehicle that makes air mobility practical, especially in mountainous regions.

Calling it the biggest milestone of his career, Tamta said the successful lift-off was the result of years of research, struggle, experimentation and relentless effort. “Today is a very big day in my life. I am extremely happy and proud to share that the first successful flight of HAPIDA SKYNeX is the result of years of research, struggle, experiments and continuous efforts,” he said after the test.

The achievement has struck a chord online. “Amazing! This can be a game changer for transportation in the hills,” one user wrote. Another commented, “We need more of such innovators rather than degree-dhaaris.” Others called it “the first major innovation from Uttarakhand” and urged authorities to recognise and support Tamta’s work. “Great news from our hills,” another user added.

While the HAPIDA SKYNeX is still a prototype and far from commercial use, its successful test flight marks an important first step. For Ravi Tamta, it’s not just about building a flying machine—it’s about proving that world-class innovation can emerge from India’s small towns and villages.
