A 22-year-old man was arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur district after he allegedly strangled his newly-married sister to death and dumped her body in a well following a dispute over her relationship with her boyfriend, police said on Saturday.

According to officials, the accused, identified as Sandeep Yadav, surrendered before the police at the Haswa outpost under the Thariyanv police station area on Saturday morning and confessed to the crime. Based on his statement, police registered a case and took him into custody.

Fatehpur’s Superintendent of Police, Abhimanyu Manglik said the victim, 20-year-old Ranju, had been married to a resident of a village in the Radhanagar police station area around one-and-a-half months ago. After the wedding, she returned to her parents home as part of a customary post-marriage visit.

However, during her stay, she allegedly left home with her boyfriend, who belongs to another community, and returned after three days. Police said the family counselled her and later sent her back to her husband’s home. Despite this, she reportedly remained adamant about living with her boyfriend.

ARGUMENT LEAD TO ALTERCATION

According to the accused’s statement, the issue continued to create tension within the family. On Friday, Sandeep was taking his sister back to her matrimonial home when an argument allegedly broke out between the two regarding her insistence on living with her boyfriend.

Police said that during the altercation, Sandeep allegedly strangled Ranju to death. He then disposed of her body by throwing it into a nearby well in an attempt to conceal the crime.

After surrendering, the accused informed police about the location of the body. A police team immediately reached the spot and recovered the body from the well. The remains were sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.

A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of law. Police said further investigation is underway and additional evidence is being collected as part of the probe.

The incident has shocked local residents and once again highlighted the tragic consequences of family disputes turning violent.
