Two inmates injured after fire breaks out in Kalyan jail kitchen

KALYAN: Two inmates suffered burn injuries after a fire broke out in the kitchen of Aadharwadi District Jail in Kalyan on Tuesday afternoon, prompting prison authorities to rush them to hospital for treatment.The incident occurred at around 1.15 pm, when the two inmates, identified as Asif Saindu (30) and Afzal Kazi (37), were preparing rotis for fellow prisoners in the jail kitchen.According to preliminary information, the fire was triggered by a gas leak. Officials said part of one inmate’s clothing came into contact with flames near the gas cylinder regulator, causing the fire to flare up suddenly. The flames engulfed both inmates before jail staff managed to bring the fire under control.Both inmates suffered burn injuries to their hands and legs. They were initially taken to the government-run Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar for treatment. After a preliminary medical examination, doctors referred them to Mumbai’s JJ Hospital for specialised care. Officials said both inmates are undergoing treatment and their condition is being monitored.Prison staff used fire extinguishers and other available equipment to douse the flames before the fire could spread to other parts of the kitchen. Their prompt response prevented a major incident inside the prison.Police said no other inmates or prison staff were injured in the incident, and there was no damage to other parts of the prison.The Khadakpada Police have registered an accidental fire report and launched an inquiry to establish the exact cause of the incident.
