Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay wins trust vote.
C Joseph Vijay on Wednesday comfortably won the confidence vote in the Tamil Nadu assembly with 144 votes, cementing his position as chief minister and giving his fledgling government a far more stable footing than many had anticipated just weeks ago.
The biggest factor behind Vijay’s decisive floor test victory was the support extended by 25 rebel AIADMK MLAs whose backing significantly boosted the numbers for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government and eased concerns over its stability.
Along with the AIADMK rebels, Vijay—who broke Tamil Nadu’s Dravidian duopoly—also secured the support of the Congress, IUML, VCK, CPI and CPI(M), allowing the TVK chief to comfortably cross the majority mark in his first major test on the Assembly floor.

More than just a procedural victory, the trust vote has fundamentally strengthened Vijay politically. Until now, the TVK government had been viewed as dependent on alliance arithmetic and vulnerable to pressure from allies. With a sizeable bloc of AIADMK rebels now backing him, Vijay has gained critical political breathing space and greater freedom to govern without the constant fear of his government collapsing.
ROOM TO BREATHE?
The rebel support is expected to give Vijay significantly more leverage in dealing with allies as well. In a fragile coalition, smaller parties often wield disproportionate influence by threatening to withdraw support. But the additional cushion created by the AIADMK legislators means Vijay is no longer entirely dependent on every ally—each supporting him ‘from outside’—for survival, giving him greater room to pursue his political and administrative agenda.

The outcome is also likely to alter the balance of power vis-à-vis the DMK, which chose to abstain from the floor test. A politically secure Vijay government reduces the Opposition’s ability to bank on instability within the ruling camp and could allow the actor-turned-politician to gradually position himself as the central force in Tamil Nadu politics.
Ahead of the floor test, Vijay held a series of meetings over two days with allies and rivals alike, including leaders from the AIADMK and DMK camps, besides Naam Tamilar Katchi founder Seeman, one of his sharpest critics. The outreach was seen as part of a broader effort to consolidate support and project political maturity ahead of the crucial vote.
With the confidence motion now behind him, Vijay’s immediate political challenge shifts from survival to governance and for the first time since taking office, his government appears to have the numbers to function without living from one crisis to the next.
