A functionary of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) was expelled from the party and stripped of all posts after he was accused of assaulting an excavator operator during a dispute at a demolition site in New Perungalathur near Tambaram. The Peerkankaranai police received a complaint and launched an inquiry into the incident.
The incident reportedly took place on the night of May 28. Harivazhagan had engaged excavator operator Alaguthurai, 32, for the demolition work.
According to the complaint, Jay, alias Jayshankar, a TVK functionary from Kadaperi in Tambaram, arrived at the site in a car bearing the party flag, along with a group of associates. They allegedly enquired about the contractor carrying out the demolition work and demanded his phone number.
The police said Alaguthurai refused to share the contractor’s contact details. This led to an argument during which Jayshankar allegedly slapped him and threatened to abduct him. Bystanders recorded the altercation on their mobile phones. The video later surfaced on social media after being circulated by members of the Excavator Operators’ Association, attracting widespread attention.
Based on the operator’s complaint, the Peerkankaranai police began an inquiry and examined the video footage.
After the video went viral on social media, several TVK members reportedly brought the matter to the attention of the party leadership. Party sources identified the accused as Jayshankar, who was the Joint Organiser of the Volunteers’ Wing for Chengalpattu North-West District.
In a statement issued later, the party announced that Jayshankar had been expelled from the party and relieved of all organisational responsibilities with immediate effect.
