Truck drivers have been issued a stern warning not to ply within the town limit during peak hours in Puducherry.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Traffic, D. Divya in a release said consultation meetings were held recently with owners of heavy vehicles as part of streamlining traffic in Puducherry. They were directed not to take their vehicles inside the town from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. to avoid accidents and traffic congestion. They have been directed to adhere to the time limit permitted for them, she said.
The members of the association have also acknowledged the potential risks associated with the movement of heavy vehicles during peak hours. They have extended cooperation in taking measures to enhance road safety, she said.
“At the meeting with owners and operators of heavy vehicles, the prevailing traffic scenario was discussed. The traffic police highlighted the accidents involving heavy vehicles. The movement of trucks during peak hours was a potential danger for other road users, including students,” she said.
The owners have also given certain suggestions and they have expressed their willingness to cooperate with the authorities in implementing suitable measures. Further, a follow-up meeting involving stakeholders, including the Transport department was proposed to be held soon, she said.
The meeting was convened following violation of traffic rules imposed by the Transport department. The department had imposed restrictions on movement of trucks within the city limits after 6 a.m. However, the rule was never fully implemented in Puducherry.
