Cuttack: A newborn girl, who was delivered under extraordinary circumstances aboard Rourkela-Gunupur Rajya Rani Express, died at a private hospital in Cuttack on Monday morning.The infant was one of the twins born to Swetadipa Mallik, who went into labour while travelling in the general compartment of the train with her husband, Sujit Mallik, on Sunday. The couple had gone to Rourkela for a medical check-up and ultrasound and were returning to their native village in Bhadrak district. According to family members, the expected date of delivery was in the third week of Sept.Railway Protection Force personnel and railway staff immediately swung into action after receiving information about the medical emergency. The woman delivered her first child, a girl, on board the train before it reached Cuttack station.Upon arrival at Cuttack station, the mother was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital with the assistance of Railway Protection Force personnel and railway staff. At SCB, she delivered a second child, who died shortly after birth.“As there was no special newborn intensive care unit bed available at SCB Medical College and Hospital, the first newborn girl was shifted to a private hospital in the Bajrakabati area of Cuttack,” said Sujit Mallik.“The newborn was brought to our hospital in an extremely critical condition. Despite all possible medical interventions, she succumbed at around 9 am on Monday,” said Rituparna Dash, a doctor at the private hospital.“We never imagined that our journey home would end in such a tragedy. We have lost both our babies,” said Sujit Mallik.The condition of Swetadipa Mallik is stated to be stable.
