Traffic hit as AU students stage protest over violence, demand FIR
Members of Disha students staged a road jam in front of AU’s main gate on Wednesday

Prayagraj: Traffic movement on the busy Motilal Nehru Road remained disrupted for several hours on Wednesday after members of the students’ organisation Disha staged a sit-in demanding the registration of an FIR against those allegedly involved in Tuesday’s violent clash on the campus. The protesters also blocked road outside the library gate of the Arts campus of Allahabad University raising slogans against the varsity administration and the police, alleging that no concrete action had been taken despite complaints. However, they allowed an ambulance to pass through the blockade, drawing appreciation from commuters and locals. The agitation was linked to the violence that erupted near the library gate of the Senate campus on Tuesday, when activists of Disha and another group, whom they alleged to be outsiders, allegedly clashed following an argument. Several students sustained minor injuries in the incident.Members of Disha had also staged a protest outside Colonelganj police station late Tuesday night, demanding the arrest of those involved in the violence. The protesters claimed that their demonstration was aimed at securing justice for the injured students and ensuring the safety of those participating in the ongoing agitation over issues like fee hikes and the reduction of seats.Vehicular movement on the road remained affected throughout the day, forcing commuters to take alternative routes. The protest continued until late in the evening. The situation returned to normal only after senior police officials reached the spot and accepted a memorandum submitted by the protesters. Police officials assured the students that the allegations would be examined thoroughly and appropriate action taken.Security around the university campus was also intensified to prevent any further escalation of tensions.
