Kalaburagi: A special traffic enforcement drive conducted around educational institutions across Kalaburagi city between July 4 and July 13 received a strong response, with action taken against 4,078 traffic violators and fines amounting to Rs 22.1 lakh being collected.Speaking to TOI, police commissioner Sharanappa SD said the operation was carried out by personnel from all police stations in the city during the period. Of the total violations booked, 3,932 were for riding without helmets, attracting fines of Rs 19.66 lakh.Action was also taken against 34 pillion riders for not wearing helmets, resulting in fines of Rs 17,000. As many as 23 individuals were booked for drunk driving and fined Rs 1.9 lakh. Another 36 motorists were penalised for driving without seatbelts, with fines amounting to Rs 18,000.Police also booked 32 individuals for reckless ‘bull riding’, imposing fines totalling Rs 16,000. Seven persons were penalised for using tampered number plates and fined Rs 3,500.Ten motorists were fined Rs 5,000 for parking in no-parking zones, while one person was booked for overspeeding and fined Rs 1,000.In addition, fines amounting to Rs 3,700 were collected for three other categories of traffic violations.Over the past month, awareness programmes on traffic discipline were conducted for students, youth, auto-rickshaw drivers and the general public at schools, colleges, bus stands and major city circles.Sharanappa said the enforcement drive would continue in the coming days and urged students, teachers, motorists, auto-rickshaw drivers and the public to follow traffic rules as a matter of social responsibility.
