Tiger kills calf inside cattle shed in Thalavadi Hills

A tiger entered a cattle shed and killed a calf at Mallankuzhi village in the Thalavadi hills in the early hours of Wednesday (July 22, 2026), triggering panic among residents.

The incident occurred under the Jeerahalli Forest Range of the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR). A farmer, Kunnegowda, had tethered his cattle in the shed on Tuesday (July 21) night.

Forest officials said the tiger strayed out of the forest during the night and entered the cattle shed, where it attacked and killed the calf. Awakened by the commotion, Mr. Kunnegowda rushed to the shed and saw the tiger fleeing. He later found the calf dead.

The incident has caused concern among farmers in the area, who fear further attacks on livestock.

Villagers urged the Forest Department to provide compensation for the loss and capture the tiger by placing a cage to prevent further livestock depredation. Forest Department personnel visited the village, conducted an inspection, and initiated further action.
