Bhiwandi: The Nizampura police in Bhiwandi on Saturday arrested three persons, including two 17-year-old juveniles, for allegedly hanging an effigy bearing the face of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from a flyover, an act that triggered strong protests from BJP leaders and workers.The incident came to light after BJP functionaries noticed the effigy hanging from the flyover on Friday morning. The party termed the act an insult to the Prime Minister and demanded strict action against those responsible.Following a complaint lodged by BJP leaders, police had initially registered an FIR against an unidentified person. BJP Bhiwandi city district president Ravi Sawant and BJP group leader and senior corporator Santosh Shetty had also submitted a memorandum to the Nizampura police, seeking immediate action and a thorough investigation.

Senior Police Inspector Vishwas Dagale said police identified the accused by analysing CCTV footage from cameras installed around the flyover.“The investigation led to the arrest of three persons, including two juveniles aged 17 and a 21-year-old identified as Ramzan Ansari. The juveniles have been sent to an observation home, while the adult accused has been arrested,” Dagale said.According to the police, the accused told investigators that they were influenced by the recent protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and decided to make and hang the effigy from the flyover during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.Police said the effigy, bearing the Prime Minister’s photograph, was suspended from the bridge in a manner resembling a hanging, leading to outrage among BJP workers, who linked the act to an insult to the country’s highest elected office.The incident had sparked tension in the area for a brief period before police removed the effigy and appealed for calm. Further investigation is underway.
