Amidst the grueling summer heat, an unexpected ecological sight is unfolding near Kallal.
The Thiruthipatti tank is rapidly transforming into a thriving, self-made bird sanctuary, serving as a vital oasis for avian life at a time when traditional habitats across the region are facing severe water scarcity.
Typically, migratory birds in Sivagangai district flock to the renowned Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary near Thiruppathur.
Thousands of birds from foreign countries and neighbouring States arrive there every September and October to nest, breed, and rear their chicks, usually departing by the onset of summer. Occasionally, early migrations begin around June or July.
This year, however, the ecological narrative has shifted. While other waterbodies have run dry, the Thiruthipatti tank has ‘miraculously’ retained its water levels throughout the peak summer months, observed locals.
Drawn by this reliable water source, massive flocks of diverse bird species have descended upon the tank, choosing to extend their stay.
Local residents noted that the sheer volume of birds currently congregating in the area has effectively turned the community tank into a bustling, unofficial sanctuary.
The sight has become a major attraction, drawing admiration from commuters and travellers passing by the scenic route.
Recognising the immense ecological value of this spontaneous habitat, wildlife activists and bird enthusiasts are urging government intervention to identify and study the bird species and also to protect the region.
They have requested that the district administration officially declare the Thiruthipatti tank a protected bird sanctuary, ensuring this newfound avian paradise is preserved for generations to come.
