THANE: Doctors at the Thane Municipal Corporation-run Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa removed a rare 8.5-kg abdominal tumour from a 20-year-old woman, following a complex surgery.The patient had been complaining of pain and swelling on the left side of her abdomen for the past six months.Subsequent investigations revealed a large mass occupying the left side of her abdomen and extending from the pelvic region to the upper abdomen.“A CT scan showed the tumour measured around 1.5 feet in length and 1 foot in width. Fortunately, it had not affected any other organs, though it had slightly displaced their positions. Nonetheless, our team decided to operate on her and removed the tumour successfully despite its complex location,” said hospital Dean Dr. Swapnali Kadam.The surgery was performed by Dr. Varsha Patil, Dr. Kshitij Mane and Dr. Shubham More under the guidance of Dr. Arun Mane, head of the surgery department.The anaesthesia team comprising Dr. Vijay Patil, Dr. Ketaki Patwardhan and Dr. Sanjana Patil also played a key role in the procedure.The patient, who was kept under observation after the surgery conducted last month, has shown significant improvement.Her weight has reduced by around 6-7 kg following the removal of the tumour, said hospital Superintendent Dr. Aniruddha Malgaonkar.“The procedure was challenging as tumours of such a large size in the retroperitoneal region, the deep area behind organs such as the kidneys and pancreas, are extremely rare.Surgeries in this region are particularly difficult due to the presence of major blood vessels and other vital organs,” Dr. Kadam said.The removed tumour has been sent for histopathological examination, and doctors are awaiting the report to determine its exact nature.
